A trafficker arrested with 30 kg of hippo ivory

A trafficker of hippo ivory was arrested in joint operation of EAGLE Uganda and police carried out on September 22 in Western Uganda during an attempt to sell 30 kg of hippo ivory. He is currently detained at a police station waiting prosecution. The EAGLE investigators learned about the traffickers from local people in the area, who were concerned about their illegal business. The arrested trafficker admitted that the hippo teeth came from animals poached in Bugungu Game Reserve and Murchison Falls National Park. Hippos are not to be hunted or captured except under special permits in Uganda, however their population has drastically decreased and are now listed in appendix one of CITES.
